Burns to the eye
Eye contact with corrosive substances must always be given emergency treatment! It is important to rinse out the eyes immediately with abundant amounts of water. This is no substitute for professional medical treatment, however! When rinsing the eyes, the injured person should look around in all directions in order to distribute the rinsing fluid evenly.
Foreign object under the upper eyelid
In the case of a foreign body in the upper eyelid, you can try rinsing out the eye with water. If the irritation of the foreign object persists, however, go and see an ophthalmologist immediately.
Foreign object under the lower eyelid
You can try rinsing, but if the problem persists you should go and see an ophthalmologist.
Foreign object in the eye
Such cases are absolute emergencies and should be treated by an ophthalmology ward as soon as possible.
Open wounds/perforating injuries
Such injuries must always be considered emergencies and covered in a sterile manner. Do not use any lotions or drops and do not touch the eye. Consult an ophthalmologist or a hospital as quickly as possible!
Black eye
A black eye is caused by bleeding (a hematoma) in the area of the eyelids, which often results from impact (a punch, blow, tennis ball, etc.). An examination by an ophthalmologist is necessary to make sure there is no internal injury to the eye or fracture of the eye socket.
Accident prevention
Eye injuries often occur at work. The activities listed below are especially hazardous for the eyes and should therefore be performed with proper care and with suitable protective equipment, such as goggles:
- Sanding and welding
- Handling lasers or chemicals
- Stonemasonry
- Working with open flames
Children, too, require special protection against eye injuries. They should therefore use dangerous toys only under adult supervision, taking their age into account, of course:
- scissors
- arrows
- knives and similar sharp objects
